Italy rail traffic update - 25 August

Please find below the latest update on the closed railway tracks between Offenburg and Karlsruhe, affecting all trains from/to Rotterdam and Duisburg, except for Trieste.

Last Tuesday German Infrastructure Manager DB Netz advised the total closure due to a tunnel collapse risk of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor will last at least until October 7th 2017. This interruption
has affected all the trains in transit via the Rhine-Alpine corridor, whose normal circulation is currently suspended.

Despite the complete shutdown of this main corridor, we have been able to minimize the impact of this situation by successfully finding alternative paths to limit disruption to clients' supply chains.

On the Rotterdam-Melzo corridor, with increased congestion on the initially selected alternative path, Samskip has decided to re-route via a second alternative path to continue to deliver a reliable service.

Each week, until the re-opening, Samskip has secured resources for running at least six roundtrips between Rotterdam and Melzo and two roundtrips between Duisburg and Melzo. This contingency service should enable us to meet all regular demands.

The second alternative path on the Rotterdam-Melzo corridor, however, does incur a higher additional cost to operate. Therefore we will increase the surcharge for railway transportation between Rotterdam and Italy from €137 / transport to €162 per transport as of Monday 28th August until the situation has normalized. The Duisburg-Melzo re-routing will not change and surcharge remains €137 per transport.

We trust that you appreciate our efforts to continue serving you and we will keep you updated with any developments around the closure of the Rhine-Alpine corridor.
