The work ethics of Samskip drivers forms the heartbeat of daily logistics. Among them is Danny Shillito, a colleague whose commitment to his job and to others reflects the very best of the Samskip organization and the values that define us.

Danny joined Samskip nearly three years ago and works from the Hull docks as an HGV Class 1 driver. His days take him across the UK, delivering containers with accuracy and a sense of pride that can be felt in the way he speaks about the role. Driving, for Danny, is so much more than just a profession. In fact, it has always been a lifelong passion. He describes his job with an ease that comes only from genuine love for the road. While many people struggle with Monday mornings, Danny never has. The idea of starting a new week behind the wheel energizes him. His dedication is effortless, rooted in his natural enthusiasm for motion, machinery, and the satisfaction of doing the job well.

Outside of work, that passion continues. When Danny clocks out, he often heads straight into the world of cars, track days, car shows, and even an annual road trip to the legendary Nürburgring in Germany. Next year, he plans to embark on a long European drive in his Audi R8, a dream that suits someone whose life has always been lived in forward motion. Yet beneath the horsepower and high speeds, there’s a gentle, uplifting nature. Danny is the kind of person people gravitate toward being upbeat, approachable and warm. Colleagues say you can’t catch him in a bad mood. He loves connecting with others, lifting spirits, cracking a joke, and leaving people feeling a little lighter than before.

And then came the day in September when all these pieces, his calmness, his instincts, his courage converged into an extraordinary moment.

While on a routine drive, Danny approached traffic unexpectedly stopped beneath a bridge. Nothing seemed wrong at first, until he saw a man sitting on the edge, legs hanging over the side. It was a moment that demanded immediate clarity and action, and Danny did not hesitate. He positioned his Samskip truck directly beneath the man, climbed onto the container, and reached up to hold him steady. For nearly fifteen minutes, he stayed there; focused, calm, speaking gently, keeping the man safe while the police rushed to the scene. Despite fear, struggle, and uncertainty, Danny refused to let go. His actions saved a life that day.

When he was later praised as a hero, he responded with simple humility:
“I did what needed to be done.”

Dan’s dedication and quick thinking were formally recognized when he was invited to an awards ceremony hosted by Derbyshire Police. Alongside the officers who were on the scene, Dan received a Constable Award for his heroic actions. The event featured a powerful video from the officer’s body camera recounting the incident, speeches honoring the team’s bravery, and a celebratory gathering complete with a large crowd, professional photos, food, and drinks.

Today, we highlight Danny not only for that moment, but for the person he consistently is. A dedicated professional. A positive presence. A colleague who takes pride in representing Samskip. A man whose character, both on and off the road, reflects the values at the heart of our company.
