Nor Lines AS launches a pilot for the coastal concept of the future

As we are experiencing industrial growth and business sector developments, the need for domestic transportation services in Norway is growing strongly. Mainly, increasing demand is being covered by land-based transportation within Norwegian and by foreign trucks, which has a negative effect on safety and the environment. The powers that be and society in general have made explicit their strong desire for more goods to be transferred from road to sea. But there are a lot of challenges regarding frequency and routing in shipping which have limited the scope of business for customers who rely on consistency and predictability.

Nor Lines Daily – consolidating sea freights

Over decades, over-the-road cargo has been consolidated to ensure environmental- and cost efficiency in land-based transport. This is crucial in such an elongated country as Norway. In 2018, Nor Lines has been in close dialogue with the extensive network of agents and shipping companies transporting goods along the Norwegian coast, as part of efforts to develop a similar possibility to consolidate sea freights. This has resulted in Nor Lines launching a pilot for a new product.

Nor Lines Daily:

  • With the Coastal Route as a basis, daily departures along the entire coast from Bergen to Kirkenes are ensured.
  • Several shipping companies have joined with Samskip/Nor Lines own ships and are contributing to a combined capacity of 20 ships that operate along the Norwegian coast to deliver higher capacity and service frequency.
  • Nor Lines' network of terminals and agents ensures a unique door-to-door performance throughout the country with sea transport as their main production.
  • Everything is coordinated through the Nor Lines Daily Coordination Center and will be digitalized via a new IT-platform with its own app.

Under the auspices of Nor Lines, Nor Lines Daily uses the capacity of coastal vessels, while also coordinating marketing, sales and booking. The service establishes practical and powerful competition for road-only transportation when it comes to delivering goods door-to-door. Nor Lines has established a coordination center in Trondheim for handling the Daily product, which gives the customer single-point contact and proximity to production. In the development phase, there have been numerous successful shipments, which have resulted in environmental and financial gains both for customers and partners. The time has now come to expand the market and give the Norwegian business sector the opportunity to take part in this unique product.

This initiative was only possible due both to the efforts and passion of shipping companies, agents and Nor Lines employees to deliver the Daily product as one of the most effective measures to ensure that the most sustainable transport solutions are central to Norway’s future.
