Working Towards Decarbonization and Reduced Green House Gases

You might have read about one or more of Samskip’s latest sustainability initiatives during the last months. From new generation zero emissions container vessels to Carbon Capture Utilization Systems, we continue to push the limits of sustainable practices as we invest both in the future of our organization as well as the future for the maritime industry as we reduce our carbon footprint.
In our continuous efforts to decarbonize our activities and support the industry, one of Samskip’s actions was to become a member of Smart Freight Centre. SFC is an international non-profit organization focused on reducing greenhouse gas emission from freight transportation and guides the logistics industry to track and reduce its Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions.

We joined SFC for a couple of reasons. First, to share our operational data in collaboration with our industry peers. The consolidated data is then aggregated to provide an overview to measure the overall carbon footprint along with the impact for each sailing route. This information is then used to create a carbon footprint framework that is further shared with relevant stakeholders. To achieve this, we have also joined the Clean Cargo Program led by the Smart Freight Centre.

Working with the SFC also gives us the ability to work with their GLEC Program (Global Logistics Emission Council). As specialists in multimodal logistics, being part of the GLEC Program will support us in covering all the modalities we utilize for flexible and sustainable logistics.

We feel it is our responsibility to share our data and collaborate closely with our industry peers towards the decarbonization in logistics.

Pedro Vasconcellos, Samskip Head of Sustainability, “The work we plan to do with Smart Freight Center is an intricate part of our continued efforts towards more sustainable practices. Our collaborative work will support our target of reaching Net-Zero by 2040."
