Italy rail traffic update

18.8.2017

Please find below the latest update on the closed railway tracks between Offenburg and Karlsruhe, affecting all trains from/to Rotterdam and Duisburg, except for Trieste.

According to German Infrastructure Manager DB Netz the total closure due to a tunnel collapse risk of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor will last at least until August 26th 2017. This interruption has affected all the trains in transit through Germany/Switzerland, whose normal circulation is currently suspended.

Despite the complete shutdown of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor, we have been able to minimize the impact of this situation by successfully finding alternative paths to limit disruption to clients' supply chains.

  • This week Samskip will run five roundtrips between Rotterdam and Melzo and one roundtrip between Duisburg and Melzo. Overall, we have only had to cancel one train on Rotterdam, and one on Duisburg.
  • In addition, we have offered road based transport solutions for urgent shipments at an additional cost, which we plan to continue to offer until the situation returns to normal.
  • Next week the Rhine-Alpine Corridor will continue to be closed while repairs are carried out. However we are pleased to advise we can arrange a contingency service and operate our normal daily train departures via alternative paths, which should enable us to meet all regular demands. These alternative paths incur a higher cost to operate, therefore we will consider and will carry out every collection as from Monday 21st August, based on this service at an additional charge of €137 per unit until the situation has returned to normal.

We will update you next week regarding our expectations of when we will be able to run via our regular paths again.

For further questions or an update on your specific shipment(s), please contact your local office or Sales Representative.

We thank you for your patience and understanding.
