Mega Containers going Multimodal
Samskip Multimodal Container Logistics is proud to offer its customers the first Mega Containers. The Samskip Mega Containers are tested and are now available on our Italian Route. The Mega boxes offer additional height and create interesting opportunities for shippers with low weight cargo or cargo with bigger dimensions. In some cases the additional height makes it possible to ship up to 30% additional cargo in one container.
First Mega Boxes on the Italian Market
Samskip is the first to operate Mega Boxes in Italy. By using Mega Containers on multimodal routes shippers are able to save costs as well as the environment. The mega containers are available on our services between Italy, the United Kingdom and Ireland. With sufficient market interest, we will gradually extend towards other geographical areas.
Diederick Blom, Route Director at Samskip Multimodal Container Logistics explains the potential of the new equipment for the customer.
“We noticed that some of our customers were just not able to fit an additional layer of finished goods, boxes or pallets into the 45ft high cube and pallet wide container. Therefore the time seemed right to start with the Mega Boxes and create possibilities to increase efficiency for these shippers. For many shippers the mega container enables a better utilization of the maximum payload or container volume, leading to lower costs per shipped unit. The high capacity per container transport furthermore enables some shippers to save up to 30% on environmental impact. In cooperation with a large producer of white goods we have tested the containers and the results have been very positive.”
Low weight and/or high volume goods
The Mega Containers are interesting for those shippers that are not able to utilize the maximum pay load due to high volume, low weight goods. The Mega Containers are also ideal for shippers of goods that are large in size. The maximum payload of the container is 24 tonnes. Multiple Mega Advantages
In short the Mega Containers offer the following advantages on the Italian service to and from the UK and Ireland
- Significant additional loading capacity versus a 45ft pallet wide high cube container
- Very competitive towards road transportation, especially on longer distances.
- Lower costs per transported unit due to extra loading capacity and avoidance of surcharges like Toll or Maut.
- Environmental advantages compared to road transport and conventional containers
