Samskip introduces "Emission Calculation Model"

9.12.2009

Co2On the initiative of Samskip Multimodal Container Logistics, the Technical University in Delft (NL) has developed a model which can be used to objectively calculate differences in the environmental impact of transport solutions. The model enables shippers to include the environmental effects of the transport solution into their transport decisions. Read on and find out what we can do for you

A bit of background

In the light of climate change and emission reduction targets, there is growing interest in the reductions of environmental impact within the transport sector. Samskip recognizes these needs amongst her customers. The positive effects of multimodal transport are widely recognized, however clear and objective tools to calculate the differences in environmental advantages were not at hand.

Technical university Delft

In order to gain more insight into the differences of environmental impact of transport solutions, Samskip approached the Technical University in Delft (NL). This university is a well-known and independent front-runner in terms of emission research. By using the model Samskip is able to objectively calculate the environmental differences between its multimodal transport solution and trailer transport solutions.

A thoroughly developed calculation model

The model measures the six major emission types1 individually and also combines them into an easy to compare indicator called: the Environmental factor. The Environmental factor is a measure related to the set standard of the maximum global emissions for a sustainable world environment. The model uses the distance, average fuel use, the loading degree and the amount of containers transported. The model takes also into account vessel sizes and related energy usage, Truck Euro class types and their varying specifications, tonnage, mileage, modality utilization and haulage empty running. In short, care has been taken to provide a sensible and valuable outcome that can be trusted.
