Passenger vehicle

Export of passenger vehicle from Iceland

All passenger vehicles are shipped to Europe in containers. Samskip vessels (M/S Arnarfell and M/S Helgafell) sail from Reykjavík every Thursday. The route takes about 2 weeks. Our vessels call Immingham UK on Monday, Rotterdam Netherlands on Tuesday, Cuxhaven Germany on Wednesday, Varberg Sweden on Thursday and Aarhus Denmark on Friday.

Receiving of vehicle – booking and storing vehicle in export port
Before shipper can deliver vehicle to Samskip one should have contacted Samskip´s export department and received quotation for the transportation. The shipper also needs to contact Samskip´s office and deliver vehicle papers and book vehicle for transport.

Vessel sail every Thursday night from Reykjavík. Samskip can receive vehicles on Fridays, Mondays and Tuesdays.

Shipper will have to deliver:

- Copy of export sales invoice or bill of sale. Sales invoice must include the following; Vehicle type and sub-type, registration number, chassis number and model (year).

- Registration Certificate (original). If possessor (umráðamaður) of the vehicle is different from owner (eigandi) in the Registration Certificate shipper will need to bring warrant (in writing or on e-mail) for export of the vehicle.

- If there are any mortgage bonds on the vehicle shipper will have to provide Samskip with mortgage certificate (veðbókarvottorð) and export warrant from the mortgage owner (insurance company or lease company).

- “Green Card” international insurance certificate. Shipper will have to collect this from the insurance company.

Shipper is responsible for resigning vehicles from Icelandic number plates.

Once the vehicle has been booked you will get information on delivery place and time so that the vehicle can be loaded into a container andmoved to export terminal.

Please note that it is not allowed to store any cargo in the vehicle (personal effects, clothes, tools etc.) other than what belongs to the vehicle. It is also not possible for individuals to travel with the vessel to destination port.

Customs clearance
Samskip (Jonar Transport) will handle export customs clearance for shipper. Samskip can also issue EUR-1 certificates when needed. Shipper is responsible for delivering all documents needed for export documentation.

Vehicles are only exported once the customs authorities have given permission.

Loading, lashing and insurance
Samskip will handle transport of all passenger vehicles that can be stored into standard container units. Vehicles are driven into the container, two vehicles in each 40 feet container, and lashed by using special ratchet straps.

Samskip is not responsible for covering insurance for transported vehicle. Shipper should contact insurance company and purchase insurance that covers the transportation. Samskip customer service can assist with insurance purchase.

Unloading and delivering
Samskip´s office in destination port will handle the customs clearance. Once the vehicle has been cleared by customs we arrange for the unloading of the vehicle from the container directly into our nominated warehouse or depot, where you will be able to collect it. If vehicle is not released upon arriving in destination port Samskip will charge storage cost.

Freight payment
Shipper will have to arrange payment once the vehicle is delivered to Samskip in Reykjavík.
