Relocating to Norway

Samskip encourages shippers of personal effects to prepare the move well, and fill out all necessary documents before the personal effects are delivered to Samskip.

Personal effects - Forms

Booking and contents list (packinglist) forms must be filled out while the personal effects are being packed. It is important to mark all boxes with the name, address and phone number of the receiver. It is advisable to examine the contents list before beginning to pack, and use it as a guide while labeling. Note: the list is in English or in the language of the destination country. Booking and contents lists shall be submitted to Samskip in Reykjavík before departure.

The booking and contents list must include:

  • Precise address in Norway along with phone number
  • Norwegian ID number (If a Norwegian ID number has not been applied for, a copy of a driver’s license or passport must be submitted). If a Norwegian ID number has not been received, Norwegian customs authorities will not authorize the turning over of personal effects to the receiver in Norway.

A Norwegian bill of entry must be filled in

The receiver of personal effects in Norway must sign a bill of entry.

  • If for some reason the receiver cannot sign, then the responsible party for the personal effects is permitted to sign on behalf of the receiver.

The above-stated documents must be submitted to Samskip in Reykjavík prior to departure.

Insurance

Liability of the carrier during transport is limited. Samskip urges all parties to insure their personal effects. If the shipper requests insurance, it is possible to fill out an insurance request electronically, or on the booking and contents list.

Samskip offers assistance to customers when insuring personal effects with VÍS.

There are three rates:

  • 1% of the stated value of personal effects, with a deductible of ISK 35,000
  • 0.70% of the stated value of personal effects, with a deductible of ISK 65,000
  • 0.50% of the stated value of personal effects, with a deductible of ISK 100,000

Personal effects and personal vehicles

It is not permitted to transport personal effects in whole or part in an personal vehicles. Note: personal vehicles and personal effects must be transported separately.

It is important to have the personal vehicles insured during transport.

Before departure, the following documents must be submitted to Samskip in Reykjavík:

A customer who is relocating an personal vehicles and intends to stay in Norway for one year or shorter must submit:

  • Norwegian bill of entry. The receiver of an personal vehicles in Norway must sign a bill of entry. If for some reason the receiver cannot sign, then the responsible party for the personal vehicles is permitted to sign on behalf of the receiver.
  • personal vehicles registration.
  • International insurance card (green card).
  • Confirmation from place of work or school regarding employment or school enrollment. This confirmation must be kept in the personal vehicles throughout the stay, otherwise it is possible that customs authorities may collect vehicle tax or even that the police remove the vehicle’s license plates.

A customer who is transporting an personal vehicles and intends to stay in Norway longer than one year must submit:

  • Norwegian bill of entry. The receiver of an personal vehicles in Norway must sign a bill of entry. If for some reason the receiver cannot sign, then the responsible party for the personal vehicles is permitted to sign on behalf of the receiver.
  • personal vehicles registration.
  • International insurance card (green card)

Tax must be paid based on the value of the personal vehicles in accordance with Norwegian customs laws.

  • A new appraisal for the personal vehicles must be submitted to Samskip in Iceland. Norwegian customs authorities do not permit customs clearance if the appraisal is not presented. 

Communication between the owner of the personal effects and personal vehicles and the customs authorities in Norway is always the responsibility of the owner.

When authorization from customs authorities has been received, and all payment arrangements have been made with Samskip, the owner of the personal effects/personal vehicles can receive clearance by contacting Samskip in Norway.

Payment options

Samskip in Iceland offers VISA or MasterCard monthly installment payments for up to 36 months. It is not possible to finalize such an installment plan except in Iceland.
