Relocating to the Netherlands
Samskip emphasises personal service for customers transporting personal effects. However, there are many things to consider.
1. Quantity: How much volume are you transporting? Here you can calculate the cubic measure of your personal effects. Note: if the quantity is 16 cubic meters or more, it is cheaper to lease a container.
2. Offer: In order to get a formal quotation for the transport, please fill out the quote request.
Please fill in all required fields along with shipment´s volume.
3. Documents required:
- Booking and contents list (packinglist) forms must be filled out while the personal effects are being packed. It is important to mark all boxes with the name, address and phone number of the receiver. It is advisable to examine the contents list before beginning to pack, and use it as a guide while labeling. Note: the list is in English or in the language of the destination country. Booking and contents lists shall be submitted to Samskip in Reykjavík before departure.
- A residence certificate in English from Statistics Iceland must also be submitted.
- A Samskip agreement/authorisation to act as representative import and export. (You will fill this form at Samskip Reykjavik)
- A duty free customs application (You will fill this form at Samskip Reykjavik)
When arriving in the Netherlands:
Begin by applying for a residence permit (Woonvergunning).
- An application for a residence permit is made at town hall (Stadhuis) in the town of destination, whereupon the following documents must be submitted:
- Show a valid passport that is valid for at least one month longer (preferably 3 months longer) than the planned period of residence in Holland.
- 2 color photographs 3x4cm of each individual. Passport photos shall have a light background.
Present the following:

- Conformation from a place of work or school regarding employment or school enrollment.
- Confirmation that the respective party can support themselves and their family by presenting a wage agreement, school loan agreement from LÍN or bank credit balance.
- Apply for an exemption (vergunning / belastingvrij / persoonlijke goederen) from the customs authorities to bring in personal effects without paying customs duties.
The following documents must be submitted to the customs authorities:
- Residence permit in Holland (if it is not ready, then a special confirmation must be obtained from the relevant town hall stating that the residence permit is being processed).
- Confirmation regarding address / domicile rental agreement.
- Passport (customs makes a photocopy).
- Photocopy of booking and contents list that were filled out before transporting personal effects.
These documents must be submitted to the respective customs office, which take at least 24 hours to process. Customs clearance of personal effects and personal vehicles is always the responsibility of the shipper.
When authorization has been received from the customs authorities, the original document must be sent to Samskip in the respective country. Samskip sends it to final customs clearance.
