Transporting Personal Effects from Iceland
Samskip encourages all who are planning to transport personal effects to prepare the move well, and fill out all necessary documents before the belongings are delivered to Samskip.
Points that must be considered:
- How much volume are you taking with you? Here you can calculate the cubic measure of your personal effects. Note: if the quantity is 17 cubic meters or more, it is more economical to lease a container.
- If the personal effects are transported in a whole container, a request to lease a container must be received by Samskip’s service department. A container may be leased for up to one week prior to a vessel’s departure. All containers leaving Iceland must be sealed. This is handled by cargo security agents from P. Árnasyni og Pökkun og flutningum. Samskip must be notified to pick-up a fully-loaded container no later than noon on the Wednesday prior to the vessel’s departure.

Samskip provides a pick-up service, which can be booked on Mondays at Samskip’s Custemer Service,

- What documents must accompany the personal effects? The required documentation varies from country to country.
- Please note that it is not permitted to transport personal effects in part or whole in an automobile.
- Samskip strongly recommends that insurance be purchased for personal effects and automobiles being transported. Here it is possible to request insurance.
International customs regulations
Interaction between owners of personal effects and personal vehicles and the customs authorities in the destination country are always the responsibility of the cargo owner. Please become well familiarized with customs regulations regarding transporting personal effects and automobiles to other countries. Regulations differ and various customs duties may be collected.
Payment of transport charges
Samskip in Iceland offers VISA or MasterCard monthly installment payments for up to 36 months. It is possible to finalize such an installment plan only in Iceland.
When can the personal effects be claimed in the destination country?
Please contact Samskip’s office or agents in the respective country before the shipment is picked-up, or before requesting home delivery. Shipments are never delivered to the receiver until released by customs authorities.
