Samskip places order for two new container vessels

2.7.2003

Samskip has concluded a contract with German shipbuilder J.J. Sietas of Hamburg calling for the construction of two new container vessels. Due to be delivered in February and March 2005, they will replace the existing vessels Arnarfell and Helgafell, which have become too small for the company's purposes.

Built to Samskip specifications, the new vessels will be used on the same or additional routes as the vessels they will replace, and are custom-designed to fulfil the needs of the company and its clientsSamskip New vessel

Both vessels will be so-called "green ships," meaning that their fuel tanks will be located in such a way as to minimise the risk of pollution in the event of leakage due to running aground or collision. Each will have a capacity of up to 908 20-foot containers, a total carrying capacity of abt.10, 950 tons.

At 137.5 metres in length and with a top speed of 18.2 knots, each vessel will be equipped with powerful bow thrusters and steering gears. Designed to burn heavy fuel oil, the main engines aboard each vessel will produce 8,400 kw of power, linked to powerful generators.

Both vessels are designed to handle all standard 20, 30, 40 and 45-ft container units, and will have a minimum of 200 connections for reefer containers. Each will also come equipped with two powerful on-board container cranes.

Crews´ accommodations are also first class, with a single cabin for each member, complete with en-suite facilities.
