Samskip updates its curtain-sided trailer fleet to meet specific customer requirements

24.10.2007

Samskip Multimodal Container Logistics (Samskip MCL) has renewed part of its 13.6m trailer fleet, adding 77 curtain-sided units manufactured by the Dutch trailer specialist Pacton BV.

Samskip is Europe’s leading operator of 45ft palletwide containers and its fleet now stands at over 13,000 units. However, Samskip MCL’s CCO Area Sales Jacques Kleinkramer explains that it is also important to offer its customers a trailer option:

“While we remain totally committed to 45ft containers and the multimodal concept, we recognise that in certain circumstance, a 13.6m trailer is the more appropriate tool for the job."

“Most of our trailers are used either for urgent movements over relatively short distances or for specific traffics where we are unable to use containers."

“If, for example, a customer in the Netherlands calls us to say he needs to load this afternoon for a delivery tomorrow morning in the UK, we would use a trailer and the most appropriate overnight ro-ro ferry service. We are not in the business of disappointing clients who may be shipping 95% or more of their regular traffic in our 45ft boxes."

Jacques Kleinkramer stresses that Samskip is not about to enter the mainstream trailer market:

“Our multimodal container system delivers fast, reliable and environmentally-friendly logistics solutions. It is the future for European freight transport, especially over the longer distances. We aim to keep out road mileages to the minimum and by so doing, we will enable our customers to minimise their carbon emissions. For us, the trailer will always be a problem-solving tool, to be used only on those occasions where the 45ft container is not the best solution.”

The 77 new trailers can carry 33 Europallets and have a 27-tonne load securing certificate issued by the German TUV organisation.
