Samskip extends its collaboration with DFDS Lys Line on the trade between Continental Europe and Norway

With effect from 1 January 2007, Samskip is to introduce its newbuilding Samskip Express onto the Rotterdam - Oslo Fjord route in a joint service agreement with DFDS Lys Line.

Samskip Express was delivered in late 2006 and is a sister vessel to five other Samskip vessels delivered during 2005/2006. All six have a nominal capacity of 803TEU and have been specially designed to carry 45ft palletwide containers.

Birna Ödefors, Managing Director of Samskip AS, welcomed the arrival of the new vessel:

“Placing our own ship on the Oslo route is an important step on the way to expanding Samskip’s Scandinavian and Baltic operations. Samskip Express becomes the largest ship operating for us in this region but we are sure she will be joined by similar or larger vessels in the not too distant future. We are committed to expanding our shortsea door-to-door business and taking more trucks off northern Europe’s crowded roads.”

Together with DFDS Lys Line´s 750TEU Lys Point, Samskip Express will maintain a twice weekly service between Rotterdam and the Oslo Fjord. The cooperation will be entirely operational in nature, each partner marketing the service independently under its own brand.

Through collaboration, Samskip is able to provide European shippers with a much improved frequency and greater capacity on this key Scandinavian route. Consequently Samskip will be in a strong position when promoting its multimodal services, based on 45ft palletwide containers, as a cost effective and environmentally sustainable alternative to using road trailers.

Samskip will, in cooperation with DFDS Lys Line, boost the capacity on the Norwegian trade by around 10% with the following sailing plan:
