21.9.2005

Personal contact with customers is a major feature of Samskip operations, a fact confirmed by the company´s participation in the four-day long Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition this September along with eight hundred companies and organizations from 40 countries all over the world.

Since the first event in 1984, the Icelandic Fisheries Exhibition has developed into one of the world's prime events for all aspects of the commercial fishing industry. Held every three years, this year¿s event is the largest and most successful exhibition in the series, with participation up by 15% from the 2002 record-breaking exhibition with over 18,000 visitors. According to the director of the exhibition, this is quite an accomplishment since participation at most international shows is decreasing.

Samskip standExhibitors were from all over the world, including Singapore, Malaysia, China, Canada, Lithuania, Holland, Germany, the UK, Spain, Poland, Norway and Denmark. New national stands were also seen at this year's exhibition, which included Italy and France, as well as returning national stands such as Denmark, the Faroes, Norway and the UK.

Covering every aspect of the commercial fishing industry, from catching and locating to processing and packaging right through to marketing, distribution and sales of the final product, the show is vital not only to the Icelanders, but to any international company as Iceland is synonymous with state-of-the-art fisheries technology.

Samskip The exhibition is the ideal venue for skippers and owners to update and modernise their fleets, as well as provide exhibitors with an ideal opportunity to meet and discuss new requirements. Playing on "home ground" is also quite an advantage for Icelandic exhibitors, as they can treat their costumers and potential buyers to hands-on experience of the newest products in action at their R&D departments.

Among the technical highlights this time was Marorka's latest version of its premium energy management system for ocean vessels, voted the best new product at the Exhibition's awards ceremony. Named "Maren 2", the system is a comprehensive energy management system designed to maximize energy efficiency and thereby reduce operating costs, and is equipped with operational optimization, simulation-based decision support, extensive energy analysis tools and energy controlling features. Among other winners were Icelandic high-technology pioneer Marel, as well as Baader from Germany and Nesco Weighing from the UK.

Categories covered the catching, processing and international sectors and Grant Collier, marketing manager of the event, said "the judges found it a long and difficult process in deciding the winners this year. The standard of entry has been tremendous from both Iceland and the international markets."
