The ship M/V Jökufell has sunk off of Faroe Islands
On the evening of Monday, 7 February 2005, the Isle of Man flagged vessel M/V Jökulfell sank. On board the ship are 11 man crew. 3 Russians and 8 Estonians, all living in Estonia. Five have been rescued by a rescue helicopter are now on board the Danish navy vessel "Vædderen". Six crew members are still missing and the authorities from Faeroe Islands are leading a search for the missing persons. There is an ongoing search and rescue operation led by the authorities from Faeroe Islands. The wind in the area is 15 m/s, visibility good and the sea is rough. The reason why the ship has sunk is still unknown.
Electronic distress signal (DSC) was picked up from the vessel at about 20:00 UTC 7/2-2005. Approximately 2 hours later a rescue helicopter was on scene and noticed the vessel being capsized. The vessel was loaded with 1978 tons of construction steel and containers. The vessel had approximately 200 tons of gasoil bunkers on board.
