New Samskip warehouse enters service

8.10.2004

Samskip new warehouse "Many hands make light work - was the order of the day at Samskip headquarters in Reykjavík this morning, when close to 400 employees joined together to form a human chain that included company chairman Ólafur Ólafsson and passed a parcel from Warehouse A at Holtabakki to the company's new warehouse complex at Barkarvogur, so declaring the facility open.

Containing a packet of biscuits, the consignment made a speedy journey from the hands of vice president Pálmar Óli Magnússon along the chain, to end safely in the grip of Samskip president, Knútur G. Hauksson. From there, it was scanned into the new inventory control system which will be used to register every item as it enters the warehouse complex, before being carried by fork-lift to its designated location in the massive building.

A dream realised

With the package safely in place, Loftur Árnason, chairman of Ístak, the project¿s main building contractor, congratulated Samskip on taking possession of the new facility. Built in just over a year, it required an average of 200 Ístak employees during its construction, along with several others from Samskip.

Congratulations over, Árnason then presented Ólafssson with the keys to the building, who replied with a short address thanking Ístak for its efforts, before handing them over to company president Knútur G. Hauksson.

"Today's opening marks the realisation of a long-time dream for all of us at Samskip," said Hauksson, adding that he was sure that the housing of all Samskip's headquarters staff under the one roof would bring them closer together in a professional as well as geographical sense.

"We'll do even better tomorrow than we are doing today," he declared.

Samskip, Landflutningar-Samskip and Jónar Transport are scheduled to be in place in the new complex by the end of this year. While much of the removal operation should be complete within the next four weeks, the company's headquarters office will not move in until December.

The largest structure of its kind in Iceland, the new Samskip warehouse covers an area 70 metres wide and 240 metres long. With a floor space of 27,000m2, it is as large in size as two football pitches.
