Samskip expands Faroese operation

- new office and weekly sailings to Torshavn

29.9.2004

International shipping line Samskip has opened a new office in the Faroese capital, Torshavn, and is now reviewing its sailing schedule to the Islands. An agreement to this effect was signed yesterday, when the company also announced the appointment of Joel undir Leitinum as head of its Faroe Islands operation, along with two new employees to man the Torshavn facility. The trio all have wide-ranging experience in the shipping industry, which should prove of major benefit to Samskip operations in the region.

As the three join the company's existing employee in Klaksvík, a port served by a scheduled Samskip service since the beginning of April this year, yesterday's appointments increases the shipper's team in the Faroe Islands to four transport specialists.

"We have succeeded in establishing a foothold in the Faroese market since we began operating there early this spring, and the response has been excellent," says Samskip president, Knútur G. Hauksson. "The opening of our Torshavn office is a logical step in our programme of further expansion in the Faroes, where we plan to increase our presence in the future."

Since Samskip introduced scheduled sailings to the Faroe Islands, first operating a fortnightly service using the M/S Skaftafell and later a weekly service following the addition of the M/S Akrafell in June, the main emphasis has been on the transport of fresh and frozen fish to the UK and mainland Europe. While no changes are planned for this activity, which is conducted in co-operation with Faorese carrier Farmaleiðir, the review of the company's services now underway is aimed at improving services to importers and other customers in the Islands.
