ISPS Surcharge

14.7.2004

As per the 1st of July in all ports worldwide the International Ships and Port Security System (ISPS) code will come into effect. This new regulation comprises a number of measures with only one aim - to effectively protect ships and port facilities from terrorist acts.

Any port facilities serving sea-going vessels exceeding 500 GRT are obliged to put these new legal regulations into practice and obtain an official certification by 1st of July 2004. As a consequence extensive financial investments were necessary to improve security procedures.

In order to comply fully with this code the stevedoring companies in all ports where Samskip vessels are handled, have been implementing new procedures, upgrade their security systems and employ additional staff.

The costs resulting from the introduction of the ISPS code will be recovered by the stevedores directly to their clients - the short-sea operators like Samskip.

Samskip cannot absorb the costs themselves and will therefore pass on the net costs to our customers.

We regret having to pass these charges on to you and trust you will understand that under the given circumstances Samskip has no other alternative than to proceed as outlined above.

In this stage we cannot yet inform you what the exact amounts involved will be, but we strongly advise to take into account that these costs will appear on our freight invoices. This can be different per port per terminal. We expect that our own terminal in Rotterdam will start at the first of August.

As soon as we have received detailed information regarding the amounts and effective dates we will inform you accordingly.
