New reefer vessel joins Samskip fleet

9.2.2004

To meet demand for increased transport capacity to and from Iceland, Samskip has chartered a 3,000-tonne reefer/multi-purpose vessel, which will sail under the name M/s Jökulfell.

The vessel will operate mainly on routes linking Iceland with northern Europe and the Baltic States, and embarked on 05.02.2004 on its maiden voyage for Samskip carrying a cargo of prefabricated housing units from Norway to the East Fjords port of Reyðarfjörður. From there, it will sail for the Baltic States with a cargo of frozen fish.

MS JökulfellLaunched in Denmark in 1989 and previously named the Nordland Saga, the Jökulfell is manned by an 11-man crew. The liner is 87 metres long, has a cruising speed of 13.8 knots, and can carry up to 3,000 tonnes or 140 containers.

The Jökulfell, which becomes the 15th vessel in the Samskip fleet, will also be used to service special projects as they arise elsewhere.
