Samskip wins transport contract for Kárahnjúkar powerhouse

16.10.2003

The agreement, due to run until 2007, makes Samskip the sole carrier of all goods, plant and other materials imported by Fosskraft to service the powerhouse project, including their transportation by sea to Iceland, landing at the East Fjords port of Reyðarfjörður, and clearance by Icelandic customs.

The agreement also stipulates that Samskip will then carry a large part of these goods by road to the Kárahnjúkar site, which lies to the east in the Fljótsdalur valley, in Iceland's eastern highlands. Although the exact scale of the contract has yet to be revealed, the total figure is expected to reach in excess of 10,000 freight tons.

Samskip's first deliveries for Fosskraft arrived in Reyðarfjörður on October 3 aboard the chartered container liner Scharhörn. Another vessel, the Westerland, left Rotterdam last week and is due to dock in Reyðarfjörður within the next few days. Included in these initial consignments are a variety of plant and heavy machinery, among them cement mixers, a bulldozer, cranes, tipper trucks, and a drill platform.

No stranger to the Kárahnjúkar site, Samskip is already serving as a major transport operator for Italian engineering giant Impregilo, the project's main contractor. As a result, the successful conclusion of the Fosskraft contract serves to further reinforce the company's presence at the heart of the largest single civil engineering project ever carried out in Iceland, and one of the largest in Europe.
